Behind the Candelabra (2013)
Director: Steven Soderbergh
Synopsis: A movie about the relationship between Scott Thorson and Liberace based on the autobiography written by Scott Thorson.
Review: This movie shows the relationship between Liberace and his lover and companion, Scott Thorson. Their relationship begins because Liberace finds Scott attractive and he offers to pay him as a companion, which is kind of sad. He will tell Scott something and follow it with “I haven’t told anyone else this and am only telling you because I trust you”, which sounded very rehearsed. I felt he preyed on Scott’s vulnerabilities. Scott grew up in foster homes and it was not easy to be attracted to men in the 1970’s. In swoops Liberace with his money and fame, dazzling Scott. Liberace showered him with clothes, cars, jewelry, and had him get plastic surgery. He even promised to adopt him as his son.
Scott became hooked on a diet pill cocktail prescribed by Liberace’s doctor, which eventually turned him to drugs. Liberace also had a wandering eye and Scott was replaced. Scott tried to sue for palimony and it was settled out of court. When Liberace was dying, he called Scott and he visited him, which was very sweet.
