The Aviator

The film directed by Martin Scorsese starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Howard Hughes and a supporting cast including Cate Blanchett, Kate Beckinsale, John C Reilly and Alec Baldwin.

It is  biography of Howard Hughes a successful business engineer man who made designed aroeplanes and produced movies and his life told over 3 decades the 1920s to the 1940s.

The Film starts out in the 1920s as Howard Hughes is using his parents company that he inherited to make the movie Hells Angels.  Iy highlights Hughes stubbornness and risk taking nature as he is determined to get the film perfect.

The Aviator is filmed in a two tone color for the first hour in red and cyan blue.  This is to emulate the style of the era that is know as bi-pack color.  It elands a great authenticity to the movie, the colors and the styles of the era blend with intended color range.

The effects for the flying sequences with the old planes are used using excellent CGI for the time.  THe shots of the planes that includes the filming of the movie Hells angels is excellent.  The dog fight sequences using the old bi planes is a joy to watch.

The film also focuses on Howards self destructive paranoid nature towards his personal relationships with women.  Howard had a relationship with Catherine Hepburn (Cate Blanchett).  A love affair that starts out well but with a lot of famous peoples relationships deteriates quite dramatically.

Howard Hughes had many business interests mainly to do with areoplanes and the company TWA (Transcontinental and Western Airlines).  The story follows Hughes battle with Pan Am to be the worlds No 1 airline and his Congress hearing accused of being a war profiteer.

Overall the film is a wonderful epic underscored by a suitable soundtrack of excellent orchestral score.

Leonardo Dicaprio is outstanding as hughes throughout the various stages of his life. Especially as Howard becomes more and more paranoid and locks himself away in rooms for weeks at a time.  Dicaprio earned a Oscar Nomination for the role and the movie earned 11 nominations and won 5.
