Gravity Directed by Alfonso Cuaron

I have been excited to see this movie ever since I saw the trailer. A couple of my favorite films are Moon and Sunshine and since Gravity was getting 97 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes I thought It would definitely be good. I’ve made this mistake before.  I did enjoy myself but I enjoyed myself like I do when I go to the Puyallup Fair and ride scary rides for hours.

Sandra Bullock plays Doctor Ryan Stone on her first trip to space.  Matt Kowalsky (George Clooney) is her co astronaut.  The first shot of the movie is promising, (and nauseatingly real) Dr. Stone, Matt and another guy we never see (until later, sort of) work outside on the shuttle.  The action soon begins and is gripping and stunning.  There are many stomach flipping moments where you wonder “Will she ever grab onto anything”? or “How will she hold on to anything with those big clumsy gloves”?  Mostly I felt disappointed.  I didn’t really care about Dr. Stone or charming Matt.  There was no back story to make me care. There was a cliche’ attempt to pull our heart strings that was pretty weak.  I wish Matt had stuck around and that there had been something interesting for the two of them to face together.

I know, they are floating around in space with  oxygen getting low and Houston nowhere to be heard, isn’t that interesting?

Not to me.  It was a fun ride but I got more satisfaction out of The Extreme Scream.
