Mamma Mia – 2008

This is a movie I watched a long time ago. I remember I had so much fun watching it and I decided to watch it again this week. I wanted to have some fun again and talk about it in the blog.

Mamma Mia is a British/American musical/romantic comedy film adapted from the broadway musical based on the songs from the successful group ABBA. This film was directed by Phyllida Lloyd and distributed by Universal Pictures.

Meryk Streep, Amanda Seyfried, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgard, Ashley Lilley, Rachel McDowall, Dominic Cooper, Philip Michael are the main actors of these movies.

Donna Sheridan (Meryl Streep) is the main actress and leads the cast, that plays the role of a strong and independent single mother. Amanda Seyfried (Sophie) is her daughter and Sam, Harry and Bill play the role of the three possible fathers for Sophie.

The story happens in a beautiful island in Greece. Sophie is getting married and her best friends arrive a few days before the wedding and she confesses them that she had found her mother’s diary and from what she reads in there she finds out she has three possible fathers. So she decides to invite them all to the wedding and find out which one it is. Her mom doesn’t know this

This is a very colorful movie and the sophisticated choreographies that go with the songs are the best part of this film. The cameras focus a lot on the expressions of the actors, when they sing. The camera shots go along with the songs, filming from the top while the actor is laying in the floor, but also doing circles around them.

The scenery of the location they chose to record this movie also beautiful, reflecting summer with its freshness and fun.

I think this movie will become a classic from our era, like the movie Grease from the 60’s. It is a great tribute to the talented musical group ABBA.

Other important movies from the director Phyllida Lloyd are: The iron lady (along with Meryl Streep) and Benjamin Bitten Gloriana. This one is quite different from Mamma Mia, with more action and more refined than Mamma Mia.

After watching this movie I watched some videos where the actors talk and that they show parts of behind the scenes and one of the actors say: “This is the best job ever. I should’ve started doing musicals earlier”.

The versions of the ABBA songs that they do for this movie are very well done, they are my favorites and they have a modern twist which are better than the original ones in my opinion.

Here is a link to one of my favorite scenes (Meryl Streep and her friends singing and performing Dancing Queen:

And this is a link to the trailer of this movie, and I hope everyone that hasn’t seen this movie, gets excited to watch it, because you’ll have the best time:

I hope you all enjoy it!
